The new HP Tablet PC's

Over at TabletPCBuzz.com, there are a couple of conversations going on about the upcoming HP Tablet PC's (to be announced on Feb 2). Its' pretty fun to watch everyone speculate and see the "inside experts" post their thoughts.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks this new convertible will look like: 12" or 14", what kind of specs, xga or sxga . If you have any links to any pictures or specs, please post them here. I'd also be interested in hearing your comments on what you think of these new tablets once they are announced.

What I want: A better Slate tablet

See, I'm not the only one who wants a stand built into a slate. A built-in stand makes a slate much more functional.

Brandon Paddock makes some really good observations. I recommend you read it.

PCWorld.com - Microsoft Tries to Nudge Tablet PCs Into the Mainstream

A lot of info here. It is really good to seethe price point coming down. I applaud microsoft are the Oar's for making it happen.

Also, coming on Feb. 2: 2 new HP Tablets. one of them is probably an upgrade to their hybrid, the other is a new convertible. I've heard what it looks like. If its' true, it'll be hot!

MSNBC - Audiovox SMT5600 Smartphone is a minature marvel

I have to agree with Gary Krakow in this review. I played with this phone for about a day and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, the Cingular coverage at my house stunk, so I couldn't use it. When I was at CES, I saw a ton of these phones.

The price point is right and the phone is terrific.

Outlook tip

Here is a great productivity tip I’ve been using in Outlook for quite some time. I’m surprised by the number of people that don’t know about it.

You know those emails you receive that you have to act on: appt’s, tasks, etc? Well, create a task, calendar entry, contact, or note from that email by dragging the email to the respective shortcut key on your Outlook taskbar. It copies the email text and puts in the note field for that item, put the subject of the email in the subject field of the calendar or task.

I use this shortcut numerous times throughout the day.

Where to buy used Tablet PC's

I’ve received some questions from people about where to buy used Tablet PC’s. Here are some pointers.

1) Check the refurbs available from manufacturers

2) Stay away from eBay, unless your comfortable buying computers over eBay.

3) Checkout the For Sale forum on http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/

4) Don’t buy 1st gen models. They are too slow. Stay away from models with processors less than 1ghz. Look for Centrino.

5) Always ask the seller if the software comes with it and always ask about scratches on the screen, and warranty status.

The best thing that could happen to Tablet PC's

In my opinion, the best thing that could happen to Tablet PC’s is price reduction. Get the price at an attractive level ($1500 or lower) and the public will take a serious look. The reason my kids don’t use Tablet PC’s in our homeschool is that they are too expensive.

Battery life is important and could stand to be improved; but we already have good battery management, and a person can bring an extra battery with them if they are highly mobile.

Software is important and ink-enabling existing software is something that vendors should already be planning to do, but Tablet PC’s are successful because they can run any software that runs on XP anyway.

Just my opinion…

Glimmer of hope in her eyes

I posted earlier about the great news we received on Thursday about my daughter, Maggie.

There is a glimmer of hope in her eyes that we have not seen in close to two years.

As a father, I can't begin to tell you what that does to my heart.

Have a great weekend and try to unplug a little.

The SlateGlove - a great accessory for the M1400

My next review on TabletPCBuzz.com will be on the SlateGlove. In my opinion its' one of the best accessories on the market for the Motion M1400. My favorite feature: being able to use it as a picture frame type of prop, something I desperately want to see more of in the slate market.

Watch for it in a couple of weeks.

Some fantastic news concerning my daughter

My 8 year old daughter, Maggie, has been fighting a cancerous brain tumor for over a year and a half. I won't recount everything here, but the tumor has proven to be very resistive against both brain surgery and chemo.

In late October, we went to Pittsburgh for her to have a gamma knife surgery.

Maggie just had her first MRI since October, and it showed a 50-75% reduction in size. The treatment still has 3-4 more months to go, so it looks very hopeful that the entire tumor will be gone in a couple of months.

You can read more about Maggie here.

Getting rid of my M200

I'm getting rid of my Toshiba M200 Tablet PC. No, I have not fallen out of love with tablets - completely the opposite.

I was using the M200 more as a laptop and less as a tablet pc. I got a used TC1100 for testing purposes and found myself gravitating more and more to it rather than my M200. Sure the M200 is more powerful, but the flexability and design of the TC1100 can't be beat. It has a great keyboard - and it comes off.

All in all, I've found that I enjoy my tablet experience more with the TC1100 than with the M200. I use the pen more; I use it as a slate more; I take it with me to church more. Its' smaller, lighter, and smoother.

So, if anyone is interested in a used M200 (about a year old) with 1gb of ram, a port replicator, and an extra battery, shot me an email: rob at zoeinc.com

NKJV for Tablet PC's now available

It took me about 40 hours of work, but I finally finished it! The New King James Version of the Bible (by Nelson Bibles) is now available on www.TabletBible.com . It is specially formatted with wide margins for note taking. GoBinder or PlanPlus is required for using it. Its' free!

This is a great thing for Tablet PC's. Thomas Nelson Publishers is the first major publisher to release their text freely for use on the Tablet PC. There are normally substantial royalty and licensing fees involved.
