Taking note of taking notes ... now a OneNote user

I’ve officially switched over from GoBinder to OneNote 12 beta for my free form notetaking and storage of printed documents. In addition, when I need to do free form notetaking within MindManager, I create a hyperlink from a topic to the OneNote section where I am storing that note.

I’ve printed all of my GoBinder notes into OneNote 12 – note that GoBinder 2006 currently has a bug printing to OneNote 12 using the MDI option, so I printed them using GoBinder 2005. I’m also in the process of printing all of my Bible stuff into OneNote 12. All of my books and Bibles will be available for OneNote 12 within a month or so of OneNote 12 going in to public beta.

The main reasons for making the jump are as follows:

1) I can’t talk about features of OneNote 12 beta, but suffice it to say it is really stable. You can read Chris Pratley’s blog for more info.

2) I really like doing all of my project planning and task management within MindManager. However, the free form noteaking in MindManager leaves a lot to be desired. I can, however, link to individual OneNote sections. Because everything in GoBinder is stored in a single database, I can’t link from MindManager topics to anything within GoBinder. Having that ability to have file level access to my notes is very important now.

3) Note flag summaries are in OneNote 2003 and 12, not in GoBinder 2006.

4) linking internally to other notes ( a great feature!!!!)

I’ll still support all of my Bible text in GoBinder 2005, 2006 and future releases. In fact, I’m working on something with Agilix that will make it even easier to implement. I can’t, however, use GoBinder on a day to day basis any longer. The way I work has changed over the past year, and GoBinder no longer fits.

Comments:
How much space does it take up(if you can say)? I just noticed my rarely used One Note is 4+GB

I'm not at liberty to discuss.

I think Chris Pratley has discussed how much better and compressed the printing is though...

Rob,

Though I missed the first OneNote 12 boat, I'm with you in moving from GoBinder to OneNote 2003. I'm glad you posted this topic because it has helped put GoBinder aside for the last time and focus on OneNote. In the long run, I think it is the best choice.

I've run out of time and patience for GoBinder 2006 and PlanPlus for Win XP betas. Great new features, but each new beta seems to take one step forward and two back. It makes me wonder if they have anyone using it in house.

OneNote 2003 has me inpressed and looking forward to the public beta of 12.

Rob, you mention you are hyperlinking to section files from mind manager, but with Onenote 12 you can hyperlink from other apps to individual paragraphs (pr pages) within onenote 12. Just use the same hyperlink you would have used in Onenote. i.e. right click on a page or paragraph handle, copy link, then paste that in Mind mManager. You get a onenote:// link that should work fine.

oh, and wwtablet: beta 1 of Onenote 12 has a bug which causes your cache file to grow unbounded over a few weeks. Until we get the next beta out, the fix it to delete the cache periodically if you find things slowing down.

Chris

Great tip, Chris. Thanks for letting me know.

I tried the link and mindmanager doesn't seem to like them. I've tried different ways of pasting the link in MM and I can't get it to work. MM keeps giving me a linking error.

I can't hyperlink back from MM back to ON12 either. Is this a bug? Should move this discussion to the newsgroups?

hard to say if it is a MM bug or OneNote. I'm suspecting it is a MM issue becuase of how the hyperlink is formatted.

If you create a shortcut on the desktop using the hyperlink, it works fine.

should be brought up in the newsgroups, though. i don't frequent them, but can you post something, Jeff?

Okay. I'll post it to the newsgroup.

here is the solution

Wow, it is interesting that you switch from GoBinder to ON12? I am on the beta as well, and I actually can not find a use for onenote? As far as I can see, everything I can do in ON, I can do in GB. and GB has so much more! Now, as I posted in the Outlook Beta NG, if they were to add all the ON functionality to OL12, now that would rock!
